Customers like to know things they should be doing to help before our technicians arrive. Here are some suggested do’s and don’ts:
Do
- Shut off the water source, if possible.
- Go to the highest level of your home (i.e., roof, top floor, attic, etc.) if water in your home is rising and you can’t get out.
- Move household items out of damaged areas or cover them up with plastic
- Mop or wet vac as much water as possible.
- Open windows to encourage faster drying.
- If weather is hot, turn on fans or air conditioner.
- Open cabinets and drawers in affected rooms to speed up drying process.
- Turn electricity off, unless it requires you to be in a wet area to do so.
- Take photographs of the interior and exterior of your home and document the damages for insurance claim purposes.
- Bring all clothes and bedding outside to dry, if possible. Any fabric contaminated with sewage should be thrown out
- Call your insurance company to begin filing a claim.
Don't
- DON’T use a household vacuum to try to remove water
- DON’T use appliances when standing on wet carpets or floors.
- DON’T turn on a ceiling fixture if the ceiling is wet.
- DON’T enter or remain in your house if you smell gas.
- DON’T turn on HVAC systems to help with air circulation unless you are confident no mold or bacteria is inside the duct system.
